After more than a year of testing, ScribeFire Next (the version of ScribeFire available for Chrome, Safari, and Opera) will be replacing the old version of ScribeFire on Firefox. I’m giving you a heads-up, because change is hard on us all.

What Changes Will I Notice?

For one, the sidebar will move from the right to the left. Other changes you’ll notice:

More frequent updates

Faster bug fixes

New features, faster

As you might have noticed, they key words here are “frequent” and “fast”: the way that the new version of ScribeFire is built (using HTML5 and other Web standards) allows for much quicker development than the code that the old version of ScribeFire was based on.

Your blogs and notes will transfer automatically, as well as any settings that are supported in the new version. You’ll still be able to use ScribeFire in split-screen mode, its own tab, or its own window.

What happened to [Feature X]?

You might find that New ScribeFire is missing a feature you relied on; not every feature from Old ScribeFire was transferred over. This was done in order to keep the add-on simpler and fast. If this is the case for you, you have a few options:

File a bug report to request the feature’s restoration.

Downgrade to the previous version of ScribeFire, but be aware that you will not receive updates to fix bugs or compatibility problems with blogs.

Bonus option: Try ScribeFire Next early and post a comment below reporting any problems you have with it.

To sum up: don’t panic, stay calm, and we’ll get through this.

In the next version of ScribeFire, you’ll be able to post to multiple blogs at once. This has been a long-requested feature, and I’m happy to have finally added it to ScribeFire.

How Will It Work?

When writing your post, you’ll do as you’ve always done: choose a title, write some content, and click “Publish.” After it finishes publishing to your first blog, you’ll be given the choice to publish it to any of your other blogs:

Simply check the other blogs you want to publish the post to, and click “Publish to these blogs too.”

What do you think?

Since this feature hasn’t been released yet, this is the perfect time for you to give feedback that could really alter the way this feature works. What do you like about it? What don’t you like about it? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

I’ve been hard at work the past few weeks automating the way that ScribeFire is tested before a new version comes out. These new automatic tests now allow me to test the major functions of ScribeFire in a few minutes – previously, this would have taken hours manual testing – and already, the tests have uncovered bugs in ScribeFire’s support for Tumblr, Posterous, Blogger, WordPress, and Xanga. (These bugs have been fixed for the next update.)

If you run a blogging service that you want ScribeFire to support (or if you’re a fan of a service for which you want support added), here’s what you can do: create a test account for use by ScribeFire and email the blog URL, username, and password to chris@scribefire.com. (Do not send usernames or passwords for your real accounts.) I’ll add these accounts to the gamut of tests that run before I release a new version of ScribeFire; if any bugs have arisen that affect the way that ScribeFire interacts with those accounts, I’ll be able to fix them before causing you any trouble.

I already have test accounts for the following services: Blogger, WordPress, Tumblr, Posterous, LiveJournal, and Xanga. Accounts for Drupal, Joomla, and MovableType/TypePad are high on my wishlist.

Support for uploading images is still in progress, but everything else should work just as it does in ScribeFire for Chrome or ScribeFire Next for Firefox.

For those of you not aware, Opera is a Web browser that has been around since 1996; it’s not as widespread on the desktop as Firefox or Chrome, but it is the most popular mobile Web browser, and it’s also the browser that powers the Internet channel on the Nintendo Wii. (Odds are you’ve used Opera without even knowing it.) We’re happy to have ScribeFire be one of the first extensions available for Opera, and we hope that it can be one of the most popular as well.

Do you speak more than one language? Is one of those languages English? If so, then you can help translate ScribeFire into your language!

Initial work has been completed on internationalizing ScribeFire for Chrome and ScribeFire Next for Firefox – this internationalization means that ScribeFire can now easily be translated into multiple languages.

If you’d like to help, “claim” your language in the comments and then download this text file. The official localization instructions are available from Google here, but the basic idea is that wherever you see something like

“message” : “I want Taco Bell.”

you translate it into your language like so:

“message” : “Yo quiero Taco Bell.”

Once you’ve translated as many sections as you can, e-mail your translated file to chris@scribefire.com so it can be included in the next update to ScribeFire. The global blogging community thanks you!

Version 1.3.1.0 of ScribeFire for Google Chrome has just been published in the Google Chrome Extensions Gallery. The only major change in this version is that if you are running Google Chrome 6.0 (or newer), you can now upload images to WordPress and other Metaweblog-API blogs. Upload your images by clicking the image button in the toolbar, and then either click the “Select File” button to choose an image, or drag and drop an image onto the “Select File” button.

Support for uploading images to Blogger and Posterous is coming as well, but I wanted to get this first iteration into your hands to get your feedback.

Install ScribeFire 1.3.1.0 from the Google Chrome Extensions Gallery
