How to Find Buyers for Your Blog

Filed under: Blogging Tips -- Jennifer Slegg @ 01:25pm

There is a trend amongst bloggers recently to start blogs on topics that are considered “profitable” or “high traffic” rather than creating a blog for enjoyment or interest. There is always that temptation to create another mesothelioma or payday loan blog, simply because you remember someone told you “that is where the money is”. But in the end, with an abundance of those types of blogs, chances are good that your interest will die long before you make the big bucks from it.

Or maybe you simply started a blog you used to be very passionate about, but for whatever reason, your interests have moved on. Doesn’t mean that your blog isn’t a quality blog, but if you despise every moment you have to spend on the blog, then it is probably best to move on, especially if it isn’t a revenue generator.

So once you have decided that you are better off not updating a particular blog, you have two choices – let it die a lingering death or find a buyer for it.

Now, the smart choice is to find a buyer for it, since that is what will probably get you the big bucks for it, or far more likely, some pocket money. Because yes, chances are good that your blog’s actual value isn’t nearly as high as you are thinking it is. But once you have made that decision to sell your blog, how do you go about actually finding buyers willing to take that blog off your hands for money?

Post on your blog
Chances are good that competitors are watching your blog, and they just might be interested. Now, some people recommend not publicly announcing it on your blog where search engines can index that particular content. But if you were going to stop blogging on it anyways if you don’t end up selling it, you aren’t really hurting anything in the long run.

Talk to those are in the niche
Perhaps you have a buddy who had told you that mesothelioma is where the big bucks are. If he already has a few other mesothelioma sites, he might just be interested in purchasing yours. So hit up those people you know are working in the space and see if they might be interested in taking it off your hands.

Blog Networks
There are some blogging networks that openly solicit new blogs. However, your blog will have to be a quality blog with good content, not just a spam blog you quickly put up and post to occasionally when you think of it. So no, they might not be interested in your payday loan blog, but they could be interested in your hockey or gardening blog. It doesn’t hurt to ask regardless, but do be aware that many do have quality standards with blogs they choose to buy. And some may have requirements that you stay on as a blogger, at least until they find someone else to take over.

Forums
Many forums have buy and sell sections, so post on both forums in the blog’s market area as well as to webmaster forums. You just might find someone who is interested, especially if it is a quality blog in a good market area.

Now, don’t go to sell your blog and expect millions, unless your blog is exceptionally exceptional. But do consider the offer in the perspective that you were going to let it die otherwise, so getting $500 is better than nothing. If you hold out for a better offer, that better offer just might not come.

It would be nice if there was contact option for someone at Scribe Fire. I enjoy the posts but I have been trying for three weeks now to reach someone there regarding the ProBlogger book giveaway. I received notification that I won a copy on the first day of the giveaway, and from the comments on that post, apparently some of the other winners received their copies. I have sent three emails inquiring as to the status of this book to the address from which I received my notification. All three emails were ignored and unanswered. Can someone at Scribe Fire please take the time to reply and let me know if this book has been or ever will be shipped?
